Par for the course these days, in the UK. All government jobs are pretty much guaranteed for life with a big, fat, imflation proof pension provided by the taxpayers.
Back in the 1980s, we were stuck in construction traffic in Tennessee, right in front of a large sign describing the project headed by Governor So-and-So in big letters My then-husband said, it must be an election year. Yeah, we're stuck now, but everyone is also thinking about how so-and-so is improving the roads.
