Russians in the Snow

How do you walk down the road when you can’t see where the road is? There’s a sign, but it’s almost buried, too! Vladivostok was buried under several feet of snow a couple of weeks ago. The mayor’s office sent out “158 units harvesting machinery,” which I imagine means snow-removal vehicles. They didn’t cancel school, but gave parents the option to keep children at home. Some places just learn to deal with lots of snow, which is apparent from the videographer’s jolly mood. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

Henri: Reigning Cat, and Dog

Henri the Existential Cat lives a life filled with meaninglessness and ennui. What could possibly cheer him up? Maybe a new companion? Let’s see what happens when Henri’s family gets a dog. As you’d guess, Henri feels total disdain for the “sack of drool,” but he eventually finds that the situation is not altogether as dreary as he first thought. (via Tastefully Offensive)

The Hits of 2014, Played with Household Items

The music is nothing but sounds sampled from everyday items, plus many layers of Andrew Huang’s singing voice. The result is a medley of six hit songs of 2014, which you’ve heard many times, but not like this. The Canadian musician was staying with a friend in the Netherlands while he recorded it. YouTube Rewind: Turn Down for 2014

YouTube stars got together, like they did last year, to mashup the music and memes of 2014. The music is pretty good, but it’s a couple minutes into the video before we see any recognizable memes- and then they are overwhelmed by TV stars. Maybe 2014 on the internet won’t be as memorable as some other years. Or maybe we’re all just a little too jaded. A list of all the folks who contributed can be found at the YouTube page.

Peace On Earth

From 1939, Peace on Earth is a Hugh Harman cartoon about a post-apocalyptic world in which humans are gone, but animals celebrate Christmas. From Wikipedia:
Two young squirrels ask their grandfather (Voiced by Mel Blanc-uncredited) on Christmas Eve who the "men" are in the lyric "Peace on Earth, good will to men." The grandfather squirrel then tells them a history of the human race, focusing on the never-ending wars men waged. Ultimately the wars do end, with the deaths of the last men on Earth, two soldiers shooting each other. Afterwards, the surviving animals discover a copy of an implied Bible in the ruins of a church. Inspired by the book's teachings, they decide to rebuild a society dedicated to peace and nonviolence (using the helmets of soldiers to construct houses). The cartoon features an original song written to the tune of "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."

This is a silly but strangely charming Christmas ad for cookies, which are called biscuits in the UK. It features cute but somewhat uncanny baby animals singing a song I like but can’t place my finger on. There’s a surprise baby animal you would never expect to see… but you’ll have to watch for that one yourself. (via Metafilter)
