A Terrifying Bowl of Spaghetti

We're getting into that time of year when you look for ways to make an impression for Halloween. YouTuber and crafter North of the Border made a bowl of spaghetti that wants to eat you instead of being eaten. You could call it creepypasta. It's very detailed, all made of clay and some metal wire. I would have just used a real bowl, fork, knife, and spaghetti and thrown in the homemade eyes and teeth, but he went all out. After all, those eyes and teeth could be used in other dishes. The twelve minutes of the building process are cut into chapters in the progress bar in case you want to skip something, but the commentary can be funny at times. See the finished product from all angles at 10:38.

I cannot quite peg where North of the Border learned English, from the way he pronounces pasta and oregano, but the channel reveals he's in the UK even though the accent is not quite British. The channel also reveals he's made quite a few weird things you might want to try. (via Laughing Squid

Seasonal Decorations in My Neighborhood

In the middle of November, we should be getting ready for Thanksgiving. Yes, but that doesn't traditionally include over-the-top decorations. There is one house in my neighborhood that is decked out specifically for Thanksgiving, which seems a little weird. More common is the transitional house decorations. That's when you have expensive and elaborate Halloween decorations that you love and don't want to take down, but you also want to decorate for Christmas. Why not both? A neighbor just around the corner had a great display of skeletons including a life size horse and a larger-than-life size dog skeleton (plus spiderwebs and lights and other stuff). The skeletons are still there, but now they are Santa Claus and his helpers. Even the stack of three skulls gets an extension because it's now a snowman. And today I spotted another example, a couple of blocks down on the same road.

Clever. Once you have invested in a sandworm from the movie Beetlejuice, you want to get your money's worth. Here it became a Christmas decoration by eating an aluminum Christmas tree. There are some cool people in my part of town. More common are the houses that just put up Christmas decor and left the Halloween stuff as well. And many of them have large American flags like it's still Independence Day. Yeah, those are up year-round because some people need to remind themselves what country they live in.

The Real Story of Halloween

In this segment of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, Tommy Smothers tells the story of Halloween, except he doesn't know the story, so he improvises.

Duh, Christmas stuff has been up at the stores for weeks. If you look hard, you can still get a pumpkin. This comic is from Litterbox Comics. (via reddit)

In Case You Don't Have a Halloween Costume Yet

You could be a really short guy with a big bag to carry. Putting the costume together will be much easier than anything you do while wearing it.

Ten Facts About It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

The TV special It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown debuted in 1966. I had just turned eight years old, and was a Peanuts fan, both from the comics page in the newspaper and from the earlier special A Charlie Brown Christmas. In those days, everyone at school had watched the same TV shows the night before (we only had two channels), so we spent the next day discussing the show. It gave us the catchphrases "I got a rock" and "Dog germs!" Relive those memories with a list of trivial facts about It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

Yes, I noticed that the video clips here borrow heavily from later Peanuts specials. The Halloween special had no Franklin, no Peppermint Patty or Marcie, and Snoopy didn't do aerobics. (via Laughing Squid

Halloween is Grinch Night

I had never heard of this TV special before I ran across it on YouTube today. Halloween is Grinch Night aired in 1977, when I was in college and had no TV. Not that I would have watched it back then, anyway. Written and produced by Dr. Seuss, it won an Emmy Award in 1978. The events in this story happened before those of How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

Henry the VIII and Ann Boleyn Halloween Costumes

When redditor Monkeygruven posted this picture of some family friends ready for trick-or-treat, others bemoaned that the kids didn't pick their own costumes, nor did they know who they were portraying. Maybe it was more like this.

Mom: Do you want to wear a scary costume or a princess costume?
Girl: I don't know!
Mom: You can be both! You can be a queen who got her head cut off!
Girl: Yeah, let's do that!
Boy: I want to have my head cut off!
Mom: How about you be the king that murdered her?
Boy: Well, okay. But how will people know I did it?
Mom: Let me tell you a scary story, a true story...

That said, the costumes are awesome. (via reddit)
