Die Hard is a Christmas Movie

I honestly thought we'd settled this two years ago, but apparently people are still arguing about whether Die Hard should be classified as a Christmas movie. I mean really, if Miracle on 34th Street can be a Thanksgiving movie, a Christmas movie, and a courtroom drama all at once, why can't Die Hard be a Christmas film and an action movie? Sure, it's a matter of opinion, but those who think it's not a Christmas movie are wrong.

Disney+ UK recruited Alfie Boe and The Kingdom Choir to sing an anthem explaining all the reasons why Die Hard should be part of our Christmas movie marathons from now until the end of time. It is set to the tune of "Ode to Joy" from Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

The logic here seems to be that because Die Hard is set at Christmas time, it's a Christmas move.  If we follow that line of thinking, so is Gremlins, Home Alone, the original Poseidon Adventure" (the one with Gene Hackman), and even The Battle of the Bulge.

Even Kevin Costner's Robin Hood movie contains a reference to Christmas (the delightful line about "cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings – AND CALL OFF CHRISTMAS!").  Does that make Prince of Thieves a Christmas movie too?

Home Alone and Gremlins are both traditional Christmas movies. The Poseidon Adventure happened at a New Year party. Prince of Thieves was not set at Christmas. I don't know about The Battle of the Bulge.

The logic here is that Disney says it's a Christmas movie. I think we’re done.

Regarding the Battle of the Bulge, the attack started 16 Dec, was stopped on 24 Dec, and Patton reached Bastogne on 26 Dec. The battle ended in mid January. Having read a few books on the subject and seen the movie, other than some overlapping dates there was not a whole lot of 'festive cred' going on back then.

Anything can be a Christmas movie if you truly believe in the spirit of Christmas...
