Ms Robinson is the kind of English teacher the smart kids loved and the dumb kids hated.

Kolo, if you taught for 30 years I'd bet real money that students had plenty to day, good and bad.
Usually the remarks reflect more about the student than the teacher, even the kid's peers know that.

To say, not to day. In my defence I was unsupervised. LoL

Kolo, I can appreciate that feeling, although I think the statement is a left handed compliment.
We've discovered dumb kids grow up to be haters. LoL

OP here. No offense intended. In my experience, there were a special class of "active" teachers who pushed the kids to relate the teachings to their own lives, taught in very animated and memorable ways, pushed students to excel, and showed a great deal of enthusiasm. The smart kids always loved them for making things less dull and engaging with them, and the dumb kids hated them for requiring more than passive cruising though the class. That's just my experience, and obviously not universal.
