For years I've talked about my youngest, Gothgrrl, and how she couldn't find her way out of a paper bag without GPS. All through her childhood I talked about navigation signs, from the position of the sun to noticing landmarks to using a compass to reading signs. In this video, BBC Earth Kids goes over many ways that you can find a direction in nature. It's cool stuff, but Gothgrrl, ...excuse me, Dr. Cellania, would want to know why you need to know which way is north when all you want to do is find your way back to the interstate. (via Kottke)

Knowing which way is north is not always necessary, because the interstate signs will tell you. However, it's always nice to know which direction you want to travel. Chicago is north, and Auburn is south. Even if she could remember that, she still wouldn't pay attention to which way she's going.
Funny, from where I live Chicago is southeast.
