So, a funny war story. A long time ago over a 5 year period I participated in maybe 100 NUCFLASH conferences. Something somewhere has been detected and an emergency conference is convened to evaluate. I'm in the White House Situation Room on one of my first shifts. Had to be a weekend/night as there were only 3 of us; Senior and Assistant Duty Officer and myself. NUCFLASH conferences came in via direct line from the NMCC in the Pentagon. The DO's are civilian, I'm military, so when that line rang it was like "you get that."
The line rings, I answer and nearly crapped my pants. I flew out of the chair and held the phone in air and yelled, "Hey! Hey! It's the NMCC! They're saying two nuclear missiles just impacted off the coast of Washington!" And just waited...
The DO's were across the room talking about something. They turn to me a bit. .pause. . Turn and look at each other. .pause. . Then turn back to me and the Senior says "Nah. Keep listening."
Satellite technology being what it was, sunlight reflecting off the ocean triggered an alert. Which is why there were so many alerts. Happened all the time. Anyway, that was my first NUCFLASH conference. Army training. . .
Of course, there's always the joke about the dirtiest sentence ever spoken on TV, "Ward, you were awfully hard on the Beaver last night!" (From Leave it to Beaver, if you don't know the reference.)
