Crystallization is when solids form from a liquid by organizing molecules into a predetermined structure. That by itself is mind-blowing, but when you use certain chemicals to start with, the colors and motion can be stunningly beautiful. German photographer Jens Heidler brings us a time-lapse video of the crystallization process of a mixture of vitamin C and the amino acid beta analin, along with water and alcohol. He varied the proportions of the ingredients and the temperature to get different sequences. I would never pretend to understand the chemistry of it all, but it sure it pretty! (via Laughing Squid)
