Yeah, we go waaaay back.
I think they finally realized they could dispense with dipsticks as many cars have them installed shortly after sale.
College admissions. Forestry program. Had a few who immediately dropped out because they didn't realize it involved logging. Then there were those who did not clue in during the entire process of researching a career and applying that it required you to be outside a fair bit.
12 used to be the age of adulthood, but it has been creeping higher, and now stands around 27.

I'm betting you'll find people who decry the "sin" of empathy are people who would emphatically be on Jesus left hand ("But when did we see you suffering, when we could have helped?" they ask, and he responds, "I tell you, that which you did not do, for the least among you, you failed to do for me.").
There's two well-defined groups of christians: those who think "accepting Christ" is everything, and those who feel there's a life mission to be a better person - not perfect, but, try to be better ,when you realize you weren't.
The latter group find empathy necessary; evil members of the former group find empathy a pointless distraction from... something. Something they don't want to talk about, much.
It wasn't about goats !
Yeah, following Christ is more than acceptance. It means taking His marching orders seriously.
