I'm sure his orders were similar to the orders given to the Marine Honor Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – "Maintain your post until relieved."
And if you look a little further in the Twitter thread, it looked like once the lightning had cleared, he did just that. He resumed his original post ... outside, back in the wet conditions, rather than reasonably dry inside the doorway.
