Someone posted a "fun fact" that said that sharks are older than Polaris. Could that possibly be true, that a star, the North Star to be exact, is younger than a fish? It sounds like something that was made up to see how many people will swallow it, which happens a lot on the internet. However, we are blessed with people who will go to great lengths to fact check at Sci Show. Sharks live a long time, but this fact has to do with the evolution of the class of fish known as sharks, and they go back at least 380 million years. That's pretty ancient. Then they look at Polaris, the star that turns out to not be just one star. Reid Reimer explains how the fun fact can be correct, depending on how you define your terms and what data you are looking at. Science is just not simple enough to reduce to a fun fact with further explanation.
