The Allendale Correctional Institution in Fairfax, South Carolina, partnered with the county animal shelter to foster cats and dogs at the prison. The program is called MeowMates and MuttMates, and pets are assigned to live with qualifying inmates in their cells. The cats have the run of the cellblock, and spend plenty of time with other cats and inmates. The cats are not only saved from euthanasia, but they become quite socialized through the foster program. The socialization also benefits the inmates by giving them both responsibility and affection, plus unconditional acceptance. Jackson Galaxy from Animal Planet shows us what it's all about.
