The introduction says these weird medical practice from history sound made up -but aren't. While it's true that they were actually practiced, someone still dreamed them up. You have to wonder what the process for that was. Hey, this might work! What makes you think it will work? I dunno, nothing else works, so we may as well try. But it doesn't work, and they keep on trying.
That one about curing syphilis with malaria was actually a big step forward in understanding how the body fights infection. Yeah, it was rough, but not as rough as going insane and then dying of syphilis. That cure was forgotten quickly once we developed antibiotics.
