For what it's worth, back in the late 1970 - early 1980s the city of Chicago also used to shut down part of Michigan Avenue to run the 'Boul-Mich Rally', a series of bicycle races. Highly popular with Midwest riders, one year the event even featured a promotional/commemorative poster featuring an image painted by noted artist LeRoy Nieman.
