A mule is a not a species, but a hybrid of a horse and donkey. Mules don’t reproduce because horses and donkeys have different numbers of chromosomes, but that doesn’t tell us much. SciShow explains why those chromosomes can pair up for one generation, but not two. Still, while mules are at a disadvantage in producing their own genetic descendants, they make pretty good surrogate mothers.

there actually is a strain of fertile mules now. Otherwise mules are all male. A female mule is called a Henny, so they must be the reference to surrogate mothers (not Mules). Hennys bite and won't pull.
According to the video, a hinny is the offspring of a male horse and a female donkey, while a mule (male or female) is the offspring of a female horse and a male donkey.
