Brood X

Click to the right to advance the story. Brood X is the name of the cicada infestation this year, 17 years after they all went underground. This presentation from Trying Times Comics will explain their life cycle.

They're so loud here in south central Indiana that you can't carry on a normal conversation with someone who is more than 5 feet away without straining your voice. Well, except for today; a cold snap of 42 F has rendered them mute for now. Chatting with a contractor outdoors this week, I had over a dozen land on my head or shoulders. I just adore them, regardless!

One thing newscasters and others need to understand...

They keep referring to this year's emergence as 'Brood X'.  This is incorrect.

Cicadas emerge every seventeen years, so this 'Brood X' was last seen above-ground back in 2003 or 2004.  That would tend to make one believe that there are a total of 17 broods, one for each year — but 'X' is the 24th letter of the alphabet.

Turns out cicada broods are numbered, not lettered, using Roman numerals.  So this year's brood should actually be referred to as 'Brood Ten'.
(and I assume next year's hatch will be 'Brood XI')
