The Muppets Celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day

Talk Like a Pirate Day was a big thing about 20 years ago, but over time, I tended to forget it until it was too late, and fewer people cared. Silly memes can only last so long. But it's today!

Pumpkin Spice: The Horror Movie

The pumpkins are taking over everything, along with their allies, cinnamon, clove, and ginger. There is nowhere to run, nowhere to hide! You cannot escape Pumpkin Spice!

And besides, it's not even October yet. Seriously, is this Pumpkin Spice obsession there to make me feel bad about my pumpkin patch's complete failure this year? (via Viral Viral Videos)

Government Officials

This administration would be so funny if it wasn’t so historically embarrassing and destructive. America deserves serious leaders.

"Eruption" on Accordion

One of the coolest musical sequences on earth, played on the world's uncoolest instrument. Yeah, the accordion is super difficult to play, but you don't see it on most stage shows, with the exception of Weird Al Yankovic, and he's a comedian. I was surprised to learn my last husband once took accordion lessons when he was young, the only musical instrument he ever played. That was a real turn after my previous late husband was a professional bass player. I did not laugh, though.

What we have here is the Finnish duo the Morander Brothers recreating the Eddie Van Halen guitar solo "Eruption" note for note on accordions. You're welcome.  (via Laughing Squid

Movie Characters Sing "Mr. Brightside"

The Usual Suspect made this CinemaSings mashup by taking clips from 144 movies and arranging them to sing the 2004 sing by The Killers, "Mr. Brightside." This sort of stunt has been done many times before, but this one sounds really good because it's so precisely edited, and many of the movies are musicals, so many of the clips are actually singing a song, even though it's not this one. That adds much more musicality to the finished product than we're used to. Even the parts without lyrics are dance scenes, which keeps the music flowing in your mind.

If go to YouTube and open the settings, then change the audio track to Klingon mode, you can hear the raw edit without the music. Sorry, that won't be in the Klingon language. (via the Awesomer

Fast Food Chain Expansion Over Time

This moving chart from Data is Beautiful tracks the number of fast food outlets from 1955 to 2026. You might wonder what Howard Johnson's is doing there, as did I, since they were fairly standard table service restaurants, although famously franchised. Bob's Big Boy also had table service. I also wondered about Baskin Robbins, Dunkin' Donuts, and Starbucks, since they are so specialized. Well, Starbucks started selling breakfast sandwiches in 2003, so I guess they count. It's all in how you define fast food. A&W never was all that fast, but it was a drive-in, so no table service.

Anyway, I was surprised that Dairy Queen started out at the top. I was also surprised at how fast KFC expanded in the 1960s. Subway is no surprise; my small town has four Subways and only three McDonald's, which makes it seem like a big town, but we do have two interstate exits. Mixue, Luckin Coffee, and Wallace are Chinese chains that have exploded recently. (via Geeks Are Sexy

Disembodied Hand Pets Cat

After the movie version of The Addams Family showed Thing as a hand with free movement about the house, it didn't take long for the toy version to become a Halloween classic. They are good for something besides scaring people, as Kiko the cat demonstrates. She is game for being petted by an automated hand for quite some time before she decides she's had enough. When Granny Makes a Will

Grandma may be in a care home with mashed vegetables, but she's still got all her marbles. Kevin sees her every day, while Brian hasn't been there in years. How she wants to distribute her earthly goods is up to her, and she can make bequests as she sees fit. What's important is that everyone knows up front what's in the will.

There's more to the story, as Bicycle Rider explains in the comments. (Thanks, Marilyn Bellamy!)

Song of the Sirens

Odysseus wanted to hear the fabled siren's song, so when approaching, he told all his men to plug their ears with beeswax. Then he had them tie him to a mast so he cold hear it but not respond. They forgot the beeswax in this parody from the Canadian sketch comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes
