Here in the rest of the world we pretty much all went metric in the years after NASA said they had put a man on the moon.

Yeah, over 4 decades ago.

So can anyone tell me why the letters LB stand for the American weight measurement called a pound, because my memory isn't as elastic as it once was.

Google is your friend. The "lb" stands for "libra," which is Latin for "weight."
