In 1970, Judy Blume wrote the coming-of-age story Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret, about a sixth grade girl confronting her religious beliefs (or lack thereof) and going through puberty with her school clique. The book won many awards and has been a must-read for middle school children for more than 50 years. Women who cherished the book have introduce it to their daughters and even granddaughters. It's a wonder the wasn't made into a movie before now. I've never read the book; I missed it by being in high school by the time it became really popular.
The first trailer for Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret shows us that the struggles of young girls are the same as they've ever been. The movie is set in the 1970s, but besides the clothing and lack of smart phones, it could be happening today. Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret will open at a theater near you on April 28. On a different note, notice the construction of this trailer. It starts off with a five-second version before the actual trailer begins, specifically for YouTube, where people can skip out after five seconds. You will probably see a lot more of that from now on.
