A Blogging Note

Content has been thin the last couple of days, because I was completely offline. We had a short but severe summer storm that brought down a lot of neighborhood tree branches, and a few whole trees. I'm surprised we had power after that, but the cable was down for a day and a half. Since I pre-load a lot of the pictures here, you might not have even realized it. But I'm back and ready to post!

Without internet, I got an awful lot of other chores done, but also realized how dependent I am. My neighbor was gone during the storm, so I thought about contacting him but don't have his phone number. Oh, I'll contact his girlfriend on social media! Uh, no. I'd think of something productive I should do, and the first impulse was to look up how to do it. And at least once an hour, I wanted to check the weather forecast.

I had to call one of my kids on her vacation trip to email Alex at Neatorama, because I couldn't find his phone number (I swear it's here somewhere). Then I realized that I have never actually talked to him by phone, much less met him, and I've been working for him for 16 years!

Modern life is weird.

Glad you're ok. This is the reason I still have an address book. Not only for phone numbers but also passwords that I tend to forget.

You really don't realize how much your life has changed until something is missing- Imagine where you'd be if you did not have your cell phone!

Glad you are OK, Miss C- have a great Sunday!

Get an old fashioned address book. Very practical, very helpful, and works in all kinds of weather! (Excellent gift for graduates to start their networking!)

After that storm got done with you, it came straight over west nashville and took our power too.
Had to setup the generator and all.
But when I lose power and the subsequent Internet, I use my cell phone as a hot spot and pair my laptop to it and I'm back in business.

I find I never appreciate power and plumbing properly until it's broken. Glad you're back in business, Miss C.

Electric and government we take for granted until it's not there to do what we expected. I have a well so need electric for water. I absolutely guarantee when the power is off, the first time I go to the bathroom I'll flush the toilet... Duh, dumb.

Sometimes I'm on my desktop computer and my hand twitches forward a bit off the keyboard in the direction of touching something on the (stupid for-looking-only) screen, you know, to open it, to see more about whatever, the way you do with the phone, and the hand curves leftward to use the trackball, like the way a cat who made a mistake pretends it meant to do that. It happens too with slick paper magazines in like a waiting room. Magazine pages are all laid out by web artists anymore. The pages look just like web pages. You're reading along and you poke something and it doesn't work, and you're like, /Oh, right, pfff./ And the person in the next chair looks at your magazine to see what was funny.

I'm sorry, I left out of my previous comment that I meant it to be also about the video of the confused baby bird whose food isn't working.

Trash and recycling service is also highly underappreciated.

Power goes out here several times a year. Longest was for 6 days after a huge storm that took out many many trees. We have a wood stove, solar lights, battery radio, a genset we run occasionally to keep the fridge/freezer cold and my g-grandmothers coal oil lamp. We just toss another chunk in the stove and get back to a favourite book until it comes back.

Very soon it will be easy to bring this country to its knees by shutting down the Internet. We will all be completely helpless, unable to even feed ourselves. A foreign enemy could do it (exploding a big nuke over the US is one crude method) or a bunch of evil traitors supporting some useless jerk who wants to overthrow the government might literally pull the plug. This is not a good situation.
