Released in 1940, The Blue Bird was 20th Century Fox's attempt to cash in on the success of MGM's The Wizard of Oz's success the year before. Shirley Temple plays a brat who undergoes a transformation after a magical journey in her dreams. The production was notable because the 12-year-old Temple suffered an assassination attempt while doing publicity for The Blue Bird. The film was a box office flop but was nominated for two Academy Awards. People recall it as either beloved or bizarre, depending on whether they first saw the movie as a child or as an adult. (Thanks, WTM!)
