He started rapping while in high school, and just got lucky that Russell Simmons heard a tape and brought them on tour with Run DMC.
Oh, I'm dense, I just realized this is talking about Men In Black. But that was already ten years into his showbiz career. So I think "came to prominence" is a bit of a stretch.
