"Good manners is the art of making people comfortable." I often thought that quote was from Emily Post, but it's from Jonathan Swift. Emily Post probably used it as well. Anyway, if you make people feel better about themselves, they will cherish your friendship forever. In this case, you can tell it's coming from love more than just etiquette. But if you continue to make people feel good about themselves in time they'll feel they're better than you, and treat you like a serf, or court jester.
