There's no mystery about why old people have big ears.
Certain parts of the skeleton remain incompletely ossified (retain cartilage instead of replacing it with bone, as happens to most of the skeleton), and never quite stop growing. The nose and the ears especially grow continually throughout an entire adult life; the feet also tend to get larger.
