Sheesh, I had kids young, so wasn't able to go to university.
And back then in New Zealand, tertiary education was free.
But someone decided to follow the American way ... or was it the English that first made people pay ?
Anyhow, now all the university kids start their working lives in debt.
And a lot of smart people who couldn't afford the fees work menial jobs for minimum wage.
Governments shouldn't be for profit.
Universities are state owned in New Zealand.
Least hospitals are still free.

Just looked it up. Student debt in the US is $28,950 per borrower on average. Seems comparable to what I owed when I graduated way back when.
I have to say I was surprised as it is far below the astronomical amount often portrayed.

chich, I think the majority are from community colleges bringing down the average of the Ivy league school and graduate school students.

There's a lot of variance in circumstances. For every borrower that has $1,000 left on a 15-year-old loan, there a new medical resident who owes $200K. The former isn't talking about it on social media. The ones who are really screwed are those with student debt who never graduated.
