If I Had a Hammer

I’m used to hearing this by Pete Seeger, Trini Lopez, or Peter, Paul, and Mary. Debbie Reynolds? That’s pretty strange. It’s a Scopitone film from the early 1960s. The YouTube description says,
You can't sing a protest song without a fabulous gown, a glamorous wig, and matching heels.
(Thanks, Tracey!)

I like this better than I like it by the other people who sang it. This one doesn't make me feel vicariously embarrassed for the singer the way so many '50 and '60s folk songs do.

Also she was terrific thirty-plus years later in Albert Brooks' film /Mother/.

Ms. Reynolds was quite hip in her own way. Check out the lyrics of "What Was Your Name In The States?" from the movie How The West Was Won. Of course she was hip. Any ex-wife of Eddie Fisher and mother of Carrie would have to be.
