I grant, it's not a *kind* joke - it suggests vegans argue too much over petty stuff, like, "why the eff would you eat a big mac?" or that they suspect the other might.
But it's not an overly mean joke either. If you feel punched-down on, I won't say not to. You get to decide if, and when, you feel someone's punching at you. I will nevertheless argue, gently, and with total sincerity ,that I don't think there was a whole bunch of mean there.
Thank you. There's nothing here that suggests that vegans are "lesser" or victims of circumstances beyond their control, which is required for "punching down." However, the neighbor woman was rather mean to stir up trouble between the couple.
