Grant Wood's American Gothic is more than a famous painting. Sure, it's a great piece of art, but there's more to it than that. When it was first unveiled, the painting wasn't recognized as anything special. But the subject matter made it something worth talking about. In this video from Vox, we see that it was the people who saw the painting that made it special. They saw what they wanted to see in American Gothic. (via Digg)
On a trip to the American Gothic house, I got to meet Beth Howard, who was known as the "American Gothic Pie Lady". As part of a cultural program she got to live in the house for a year and document her experience. She gave my son and I a tour of the (very small) house, and we got to look out of "the" window. She baked a lot, and sold her wares from the porch. One last interesting note: her Mini Cooper had an Iowa Plate that commemorated Iowa Treasures, and the image that was used was the American Gothic House. Which made her the only person I have ever known that had a picture of her house on her license plate!
