Composers just want to have fun. Beethoven wrote a movement of one of his early symphonies around the sounds his gastrointestinal tract were making.

Singer B.J. Ward confirmed the story on her CD "Stand Up Opera", though she did not cite her source. Apparently Mozart did write the aria for that particular soprano because she was his librettist's mistress, so naturally she got the part. Nepotism! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbnuScLLsM8
