Tonight, or rather, between midnight and dawn Sunday morning, will be the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower for 2023. This year's shower is supposed to be spectacular, because the moon won't interfere much, and the earth is currently passing through the densest part of the comet comet Swift-Tuttle's debris field. But you have to get away from city lights to really see the best of it, and let your pupils open as much as possible. Smithsonian has a guide to watching the show. But if you miss it tonight, you can still catch the Perseids as they decline for another couple of weeks. (Thanks, WTM!)

My son and I drove 15 minutes out of the city at midnight last night.
It was very humid, unfortunately, so the city's light pollution was still very strong. We went to a spot which is usually a lot darker (about as dark as we can find without driving for an hour). Even though there weren't any clouds, it was still difficult to make out stars due to the city lights reflecting the humidity.
But we did see four good shooting stars during our half hour of watching. Worth it, since he had never seen one before.
