This is what Super Bowl halftime shows used to be. They weren't watched, but filled time while everyone went to the toilet and got more food for the second half. There was even time to call people and talk about the game. But the show in 1992 was like a high school production of Lawrence Welk in Las Vegas. It was so uninteresting that the next year, they handed over the whole production to Michael Jackson. Since then, it's been a superstar concert series that draws people who care not one bit about football.
We recall left shark and Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction, but those are just moments of otherwise forgettable shows. Relive the best shows by watching them all again: Bruce Springsteen, U2, Tom Petty, and the greatest Super Bowl halftime show ever, featuring Prince.
Five Thirty Eight ranked the halftime shows of the last 30 years by some new star power metric, and the A.V. Club also did a ranking (if you want to skip the slideshow, here's their list). Your opinion may vary.

I'm not gonna watch the game, or the halftime, or the commercials, or anything else. Instead, I'll probably head for the laundromat since the odds are good I'll have it all to myself. I can always check Sportscenter later in the evening or tomorrow morning to see who won — not that it matters one way or the other to me — and whether or not my numbers in the pool came up.

This halftime show('92) was complex and huge eye candy for the cameras but not particularly entertaining despite the time and hard work all those dancers put into it. It's acceptable to the network and league big shots if you can't pick out anything specifically wrong with it.
