Some people put eggshells back in the carton. Is it safe? My daughter does this, but I prefer them to go right into the compost bucket.

I bet you are very proud of your daughter- I would be!
I don't worry about critters in the compost pile, because the critters are all around us anyway. When I add the household bucket, I cover it with grass clippings to keep the smell down, but that probably doesn't deter birds, bugs, and rodents.
Just thinking out loud regarding the abortion issue: The civil rights movement in the 1950s was successful in large part because many prominent and not so prominent people were willing to pay the consequences of disobeying laws that they viewed as unjust. Their actions, and the reactions of the people who opposed them, shed light on the awful treatment of Black people to the extent that the rest of the nation could not just pretend that it had nothing to do with them.
The pro-choice movement needs people who are willing to do what is right. A doctor in Ohio should have performed that abortion for that 10 year old and let the country see the consequences of state laws. Same with the incident in Texas, and other incidents which largely go unnoticed. Force these politicians and proponents of "no abortion for any reason" to stand up in public and defend these laws. There must be organizations and individuals who would help fund the legal battles that would be waged. I believe the majority of people in this country are OK with "reasonable" abortion policies, and debate about what is reasonable is OK.

We're done here. But - if you then cook your eggs on gas stove, you're really asking for trouble. Some people just like living on the edge.
Eggs as gathered have a natural coating that seals the pores in the shell so they don't dry out or let tiny bad guys in. But in the US the eggs are washed before packaging removing that protective coating. After that the permeable shells are vulnerable to contamination.
If you have hens or can buy from the farm it's a crap shoot. That coating is more likely to carry nasties, but the inside is better protected.
Baum has yet to hear of anyone getting sick from putting empty eggshells back in in the carton.
1- Dead men tell no tales.
2- If someone gets sick/dies, even if it's proven to be Salmonella, how would you prove putting the shells back in the carton caused it?

Do you really think Mrs Jones is going beyond just saying food poisoning or Salmonella?
