Today is Columbus Day, which means little to anyone outside of government workers and bank tellers, who have the day off. Christopher Columbus was made into a hero to make Americans feel good about the way our continent was colonized and the way our nation was founded. Only recently have we been able to admit how brutal that process was. Confronting the facts about our history does not make us less of a nation. In fact, it can help us become a better, fairer, more inclusive nation.

*Heh* When I worked in govmint we called it "Italian Heritage Day"-- they tried to get rid of the holiday, but the Italian lobby was strong. Now I like to think of it as First People Day.
