Peer Review

And no one was at all surprised. However, that's not the way labor disputes work. Management is not going to give in just because it's the right thing to do. Maybe they should quit volunteering. But then I thought, maybe it's required by their universities or something, so I looked up some articles, and found this.

First of all, just being asked to review a paper is an honor. The editorial staff of a recognized journal have read your CV and decided that you have the necessary expertise in your chosen field to reliably judge whether a new piece of research is a worthwhile contribution to the field, and whether they can be confident in hitching their journal’s wagon to its star.
That's like an artist, writer, or intern working "for the exposure." It's free labor and drives the cost of all labor down. This comic is from Randall Munroe at xkcd, who gets plenty of exposure for nothing, so I hope you will buy one of his books.
