Mark Zuckerberg gave the commencement address at Harvard University's graduation ceremonies on Thursday -and grabbed most of the headlines. But he wasn't the only celebrity on hand. Ten honorary degrees were bestowed, including a doctor of music to composer John Williams. The Harvard Din and Tonics, an a cappella group, performed a tribute to Williams during the ceremonies.
The medley of movie themes included music from Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, Superman, Jaws, and more. (via Laughing Squid)
With the body of work that this man has produced, I find it surprising that it is only now that he is being awarded a PhD in Music. And why only an 'honorary' doctorate? Certainly his work stands on its own merits.
Well, sure, his work stands on its own merits, but for that you get Oscars, not PhDs. Williams was never a student at Harvard. He went to Julliard and other schools.
I was just comparing it to the way that I can sign up for college and earn credits toward a bachelor degree based solely on my "life experience". Williams' "life experience" would certainly qualify him for better than merely a Bachelor's in music.

Per Wikipedia: Williams has won five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, seven British Academy Film Awards, and 23 Grammy Awards.
