This clip is from the 1929 film Tarzan the Tiger. It was not the first Tarzan film, but the first with sound. Frank Merrill did his best to illustrate vocally what Edgar Rice Burroughs had written about, but the final product sounds totally lame to our ears, after decades of hearing Johnny Weissmuller's iconic yodel. But was the yell we know so well really Weissmuller's? Mental_floss looks at the history of that yodel in a post called The Disputed History of the Tarzan Yell.
