What We've Learned From Twin Studies

When you think about how your life turned out, you might wonder how it happened. How much can you attribute to, or maybe blame on, your family? An awful lot of it. You probably resemble your siblings in appearance, health, temperament, and psychological well-being. But is that because you carry the same genes, or because the same parents raised you? The question of nature vs. nurture has been around for a long time. That's why scientists are so interested in twin studies. Identical twins have the same genes, so there's a factor you can control for. But most twins also have the same environment, too. 

However, throughout the 20th century, scientists have been able to study the phenomena of twins raised separately, which opened a new door to answering the question of nature vs. nurture. From these studies, it turns out that genetics has more say in some factors, while environment is more important for other facets of life. This video from AsapSCIENCE shares some of the findings of those studies, but it doesn't address the disturbing scenario that made them possible. Why have there been so many identical twins raised apart? It's already a tragedy when a child cannot be raised by their biological parents, but being separated from your identical twin only adds more unnecessary trauma. How does finding that out later in life affect the studies?

Better to not say anything at all about a 15-year-old. Take it from me, your relationship will change drastically when they want driving lessons and advice in choosing a college. How to Ruin Mother's Day

Motherhood is hard, and it's nice to be appreciated. Mother's Day is an official attempt to ritualize that appreciation, and some mothers have learned to weaponize it. Well, to be honest, these are the mothers who have mastered the guilt trip and use it all the time. Guilt trips may be successful on the surface, but they do nothing to build real relationships within the family. 

In this situation illustrated by Kristen Marie (she plays all the parts), grandma is used to being large and in charge, while her daughter-in-law was looking forward to quietly celebrating her first Mother's Day after giving birth, and her daughter is struggling with becoming a mother. No good can come of her complete obliviousness.

My Strange Grandfather

This delightful animation is from Dina Velikovskaya of the Russian State University of Cinematography (VGIK). A child can't understand why her weird grandfather spends so much time picking up trash from the beach. Then his secret is revealed! It's lovely when children finally realize how wonderful it is to have strange grandparents. (via Metafilter)

Swiftie Dads

In 2023, millions of fans went to stadiums to see Taylor Swift's Eras tour. Most of the fans were young ladies, many of them too young to drive to concerts. Tickets were very expensive, and often out of reach for entire families. So the fathers of fans who were lucky enough to get tickets took their daughters to the arena, and then waited in the parking lot for hours to take them home. With so many other men in the same boat, they had a community of sorts in the parking lot. After all, they had a few things in common. 

Hearing the music through their children, some of these dads are Taylor Swift fans themselves, and some are not, but they all love their daughters. Paul Scheer noticed the parking lot phenomenon and spent several evenings outside Swift's concerts in Los Angeles talking to these dads, 50 of them, to see who they were and how they felt about what they were doing. T-rex Family Waits for School Bus

Kimberly White and the rest of her family were there at the bus stop to see her eldest daughter get off the school bus. Can you imagine what the rest of the students had to say? They'd say that's really weird, but at the same time, they'd wish their families were that much fun. 

"My family and I decided to dress up in costumes as our oldest daughter came home from school. We encourage our children to work hard, play hard, and not take life too seriously as shown clearly in this video."
