27 Drinks Made From Coffee
For some reason, I always thought there was coffee, and then there was coffee with other stuff in it. This mental_floss video features guest host Wheezywaiter from The Gaslight Coffee Roasters in Chicago, who knows a lot more about coffee than I do. Since this is not a Starbucks video, I still haven't found out whether there is any coffee in a Pumpkin Spice Latte. (via mental_floss)
Teenager Gets Robotic Arm
Dee Faught was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, or brittle bone disease. He's now 17 years old, and his biggest wish is to be able to reach things, so he can be more independent. A team of bioengineering students at Rice University designed a robotic arm that does the things Faught needs. It's not yet perfected, but this recent tryout shows the arm's promise.
The students, who did the bulk of their work at Rice’s Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen, hope to commercialize the product, they see themselves working on it even after graduation. They are applying for grants to further develop R-ARM and hope to work with advisers at Rice’s Jones Graduate School of Business to devise a business plan.Read more about the project at Rice. (via reddit)
Gonzalez said he is aware of commercial robotic arms that cost upward of $25,000. The students made Faught’s arm for $800. “As we start producing more, the cost could go down even further,” Nojoomi added.

How to Make Star Wars Great Again
TrumanPDX sends an open letter to J.J. Abrams in the form of a video explaining what made Star Wars so special in the first place. I agree, follow what was great about the original trilogy without trying to outshine or out-CGI the prequels. But when he asks for fewer cutsie characters, well, good luck with that. After all, Disney is never going to pass up an opportunity for product marketing. (via Ryan Galloway)

5 Places That Are Still On Fire
Living near an active volcano can make you nervous, but it's not the only fire down below. Coal is a long-burning mineral hidden underground that can ignite when the circumstances are right. Here are five coal seams that have been burning for a long time, in an article I posted at mental_floss.

The Difference Between Sperm and Sperm Whales
The physics of scale has a profound effect on locomotion. The way we move through the world seems so normal, but is very different from what a single-cell organism has to deal with. The title comparison of this TED-Ed presentation comes from the fact that a sperm is a single cell that must move, but cannot do it the same way larger organisms like a whale moves around. Aatish Bhatia gives us the short version, with animation by Brad Purnell. You'll find a more in-depth explanation at Bhatia's website. (via Viral Viral Videos)

A library can operate without a cat, but a library with a cat is special. They draw new patrons to the library, they make people smile, calm the staff, and they keep mice away.
