CAPTCHA Hell

 

The concept of a CAPTCHA was introduced to keep robots from spamming websites and spying on users. But then the bots improved, so the CAPTCHAS had to be made more difficult. And more frustrating. As the bots got better at fooling the software into believing they are human, we started to confront multiple CAPTCHAS tests, and it's often so annoying that we give up completely. 

Now there's a video game that captures the frustration of CAPTCHAS, called CAPTCHAS Hell. Since we've all been there, it seems completely counterintuitive that gamers would want to recreate that misery on purpose, but some folks look at it as a challenge. Can you get through a maze of CAPTCHAS in order to purchase concert tickets online? Even if you don't want to try, you'll get a kick out of vicariously witnessing someone else try their luck in this game trailer. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

You're Playing Monopoly Wrong

    
People don't read the rules of Monopoly anymore. They just play Monopoly the way they were taught, and many of the rules have fallen by the wayside. Simon Whistler explains the most common Monopoly rules that are ignored these days, and how the way most folks play it these days slows the game down and makes it more boring. It's still pretty ruthless, though.  

A Perfect Game of Sarabande Co-Op

    
I had to look up a lot of terms to understand this video, but you don't really have to understand it to be impressed. The Sarabande is a dance that dates back about 500 years, and it is notable for being three times as fast as a normal dance. Sarabande 2X Co-Op is a very difficult video game that uses a sarabande song at 157 beats per minute. It's played on the Pump It Up arcade game console that you play with your feet, like Dance Dance Revolution, except there are five foot pads, or ten if you play with a partner. Got all that? 

Gamers ElijahTS and Tomatonium recently became the first team ever to finish this truly difficult game with a perfect score, during a livestream with plenty of witnesses. This is not just watching two guys play a video game; this is serious fancy footwork. They don't really get going until about 50 seconds into the video, and by then you'll be glad you stuck with it. Famous communist leaders from around the world are assembled for a television show. They assume it will be a political discussion, but this is Monty Python, so that's what what happens. This is from their Hollywood Bowl show.

Michael Scott in the World of Fallout 4

In the sitcom The Office, Michael Scott is a corporate middleman at Dunder Mifflin Paper Company, Inc. His main purpose is to supervise a staff and avoid any real work. When this character is transported into the post apocalyptic world of Fallout 4, his is tasked with protecting colonies from attack, but he still just doesn't want to do the work. His main mechanism is to make a joke out of it, but the apocalypse is the most inappropriate place to make jokes.  

This mashup is the work of eli_handle_b.wav, who has found his niche in putting comedic characters into life-or-death video game situations. (via Born in Space) 

The Fair Maiden

Epic NPC Man takes a cockeyed look at the nuts and bolts of gaming, using real people instead of computer graphics. In this video, he explores the moment after the player has fulfilled his quest to rescue the damsel in distress. She's been the prisoner of the villain for ten years. Our hero takes her to her home, but now what? Will he marry her and live happily ever after? Will he gallantly consider her freedom and happiness as his only reward? Will he at least get a kiss? Let's Remember, this is a video game, in which the player controls the action. The player is a gamer, so his priorities might be different from whatever you, the viewer, would like to see. Funniest Wrong Jeopardy! Responses

Jeopardy! contestants come up with some funny lines when they have no clue for the answer, but even funnier are the sincere attempts that go off the rails. Some are even Freudian, like when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar guessed movie ratings. This compilation is pretty amusing, but I was frustrated by the clips where we never found out the correct answer. I still think Ken Jennings should have gotten credit for his garden implement. 

The Best Jenga Move Ever

This guy chose a peculiar block to remove in a large Jenga tower. If it were me, I'd go for the second or third layer from the top, but I am not a Jenga wizard. However, I think we've found one. Or maybe he's just lucky. Anyway, you're not going to see another move like this for a long time. And everyone in the family is there to witness it, at least one of whom has a camera going. A Truly Interesting Board Game Table Review

I don't normally post product review videos, and I know nothing about premium game playing tables, but you will enjoy this. Jeff Kornberg of The Dragon's Tomb makes videos about tabletop games, and his reviews can be hilariously scathing. Seemingly unaware of this, a company called Starmork offered to send him their new deluxe game table to review. 

Kornberg tells the tale of their correspondence, which took months, but he finally received the table. Here he presents to you in all its glory. As funny as the review is, the punch line at the end is delivered by someone besides Kornberg. (via Metafilter)

Leftover Pasta

When you're young, you might think of your brother as merely a companion who has always been there, and you don't really appreciate him until something goes very wrong. Caleb got himself trapped inside a video game titled Leftover Pasta. His little brother Frankie can save him only by completing the game. But Frankie is younger and this mission (and the game) is making him very nervous. The game itself is hard to crack and nonsensical to those of us not familiar with this kind of challenge. But that's not really important to the plot. It's really about the love these brothers have for each other.

Ben Knight made this short film for his BFA degree at CalArts. From the credits, it appears that his family did the voices. They did the music, too. (via Metafilter)

New Ghosts in the Pac-Man Grid

Pac-Man has been avoiding or killing the same ghosts for 45 years now (as if you can really kill a ghost). He's gotten to known them all and their individual quirks pretty well. But suddenly now he runs into a ghost he's never met before. A stranger in the Pac-Man grid? It turns out that one of the ghosts couldn't get out of jury duty and they had to call in a replacement. The problem is that the temp agency sends them ghosts who can't get a steady job for one reason or another. How bad do you have to be to be bad among ghost?
