I looked at this and said, India doesn't have two billion people! India has 1.4 billion, but this map includes Pakistan, Bangladesh, and a couple other countries in that quadrant.

Second Honeymoon

Gilbert and Grace Caldwell were married in 1957. They had reservations for their honeymoon at the Mount Airy Resort in Pennsylvania, but were turned away when the management saw they were black. A group of young students decided that it's not too late to do the right thing, even 60 years later. (via Bits and Pieces)

Robin

In 2020, Jamie Costa wanted to make a film biography of Williams, who died in 2014. He portrayed Williams in this five minute concept film, but in discussions, found out that Williams' family had no interest in turning it into a feature-length movie, so Costa pulled the short. Five years later, the family has no objections to Costa releasing the short online again, although they still do not want a full-length film. Any proceeds from the short will go to charity.

This scene is set in 1982, on the set of the sitcom Mork & Mindy. Williams receives some devastating news, but the show must go on. It shows how Williams dealt with heartbreak by leaning into his comedy. (via the Awesomer

Year-end Lists 2025: People

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans. 🧵 1 of 9

One Night a Year

He doesn't go out very much because he has extensive scarring from burns. He looks forward to Halloween, the one night he can mingle with strangers and no one thinks he's different. No one is uncomfortable around him. No one whispers. They compliment his costume. But that's just one night a year.

The French organization Burns and Smiles produced this video to help us put ourselves in the place of someone who looks different. (via Metafilter

Robert Redford

Actor Robert Redford died Tuesday at the age of 89. That's a good long life, but I hate to think of him as old, or gone. I first remember him from the 1967 movie Barefoot in the Park. I watched him in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Way We Were, Jeremiah Johnson, All the President's Men, and anything else he was in because he was just so gorgeous and engaging.

History's Worst Cheapskates

You might think your parents were cheap, but they'd prefer to be called thrifty. That may be all well and good for everyday people who have to live on a budget, but the rich are not like you and me. Once someone decides that acquiring money is their goal, they tend to not want to let any of it get away. Some very rich people in history turned this desire into an obsession, even to the detriment of their own health and well-being. Since money is power, it also worked to the detriment of their families, employees, tenants, and everyone around them. Weird History tells us about ten of these rich misers who wasted their lives hoarding money as if their lives depended on it.

An Accessible Skate Park Designed for Blind Skateboarders

Learning the art of skateboarding takes courage and the willingness to fall and get up again. Imagine how much courage it takes to do that when you can't see where you are going. Dan Mancina is a blind skater who founded Keep Pushing Inc., an organization dedicated to serving the differently-abled community. He built the world's first accessible skate park in Detroit, Michigan. The Ranch is designed for blind skateboarders who use a cane, and also for those with low vision and even people who use wheelchairs. In the video above, Mancina explains the adaptive features of the skate park. You can see other blind skaters try the park out at Laughing Squid. See Mancina's story in this post

The Simple Joys of the Dull Men’s Club

Some men who do mundane things for fun came together and formed the Dull Men's Club. Great Big Story thought they were interesting enough to make a video about. That in itself negates the very idea of the club. However, when dull people get together, they can be pretty extraordinary. They represent such a variety of odd hobbies that you might discover one you're interested in. Beyond that, these men (and a few women) embody the idea that taking pride and joy in simple things pays off in the long run.  (via Laughing Squid
