Apollo the High Jumper
Today I found out that I'm not the only person who has a big orange cat named Apollo. This Apollo is in pretty good shape- he can jump over six feet high! Apollo can be pretty demanding, especially when it comes to food. He seems determined to grab every bit of pleasure out of life. You have to respect that. Apollo's human is a veterinarian, so we know he's getting good care, and is very much loved and appreciated for who he is. You can see more of Apollo's feats of disrespecting gravity at Instagram.
Pineapple Cake
This was my strategy after Thanksgiving. The food was all so good, I knew I'd either gorge myself on leftovers and eat too much, or else something delicious would go bad before I got to it. So both daughters took a boxful with them. They have become a lot more interested in leftovers since they started buying their own groceries. This comic is from Chris Hallbeck.

The Unicorn Dog
Rae is a playful, affectionate golden retriever who looks like a unicorn because she has one ear, and it's on the top of her head! This was the result of a horrific injury when she was a puppy. It's a wonder that the rest of her face looks as normal as it does, which is a tribute to the veterinarians who treated her. It was also at that veterinary clinic that Rae found her human mom, who really needed a friend. And to answer your question, yes, Rae can hear just fine.

The Bay of Fundy Tides Don't Generate Electricity
The Bay of Fundy in Canada is famous as the place with the highest tides on earth. The way water moves around against various earth features is crazy. Rivers actually change direction twice a day! Queso’s Coping Mechanism
Queso is a pit bull with some issues. He suffers from phobias. According to his owner, he is afraid of “the kitchen floor, the printer, and doorways” among other things. Oh, he can face his fears; he just can’t face them head first. Speculation is that he ran into a glass door a few too many times in the past. A Tribute to 80's Entertainment
This video is a nostalgic treat. I was watching and thought, "Wait, did I really spend ten years of my life just being entertained?" Then I remembered that I worked in entertainment. Besides, some of these movies I only saw much later thanks to Blockbuster video stores. (via reddit)
Otter and Bunny
Bunny and Otter were both born with physical abnormalities affecting their front limbs. Otter also had a hole in his skull, through which his brain bulged out. Abandoned by their mother, they were found and taken to Baby Kitten Rescue, which specializes in kittens who need extra attention. With lots of love and medical attention, they are both thriving.
Otter came through his brain surgery just fine, and is recovering in his foster home. He will be able to give up the helmet as soon as his stitches come out. (via Laughing Squid)

Restoring a 1964 Paul Bunyan
The giant fiberglass statues of midcentury American advertising are becoming more and more rare, so it's a treat any time you see one these days. American Giants is a company that finds and restores these iconic statues, but it's not easy. Watch how they take an abandoned, weather-beaten Paul Bunyan statue in two pieces and do a complete refurbishing. They gave him new feet, stronger bones, and a face that could light up a room! The result is stronger and shinier than the original statue, but still very much recognizable as an original Paul Bunyan. While the process is impressive, the before-and-after pictures at the end are amazing. (via Nag on the Lake)

The Photo-BOOM Electro-Pranker 3000
Mehdi Sadaghdar of ElectroBOOM made an electrical device he calls the Photo-BOOM Electro-Pranker 3000. The purpose is to startle passers-by with sound, flashing lights, and explosions. He gets deep into the details of the electrical principles involved in this genius contraption. But that's not what we are here to see. If you've seen any previous ElectroBOOM video, you can probably guess that he ends up pranking himself more than anyone else. The last minute of this video is an ad. (via reddit)

Baby carrots are a delightful snack: ready anytime, crunchy without being dry, and good for you. But did you know they were born out of a desire to reduce food waste? That almost makes up for the extra expense of having someone else cut and peel them for you!

Lainey Molnar's illustrations highlight the struggles of women and how to change or accept them. This one hits home to me both from my own experience and from raising daughters. When you are young, the greatest thing about a guy is that he likes you. It's the only thing, really. It takes some maturity to judge any other factors. We can help that maturity along by giving our daughters the confidence to think that they are worthy, their feelings matter, and that they will have choices themselves.
My Cat Lucy
The animated short My Cat Lucy walks the line between adorable and terrifying. How do you do that? Simply make it about a cat. Black cats can be sweet as sugar, but they have the reputation of demons from the depths of hell. Lucy is just a cute black kitten, but like anyone she can only take so much. This film is from Kate Vaillant of the Ringling College of Art and Design Class of 2022.
Running the Gammatar
Joe Kramer’s short film Running the Gammatar is a lovely story about a young couple trying to negotiate a relationship while their city is being terrorized by a giant fire-breathing monster. The Mask
In 1994, the movie The Mask proved that you can make live-action cartoons. It showcased the creative use of CGI, but it was Jim Carrey's physical humor that made it work better than others that tried the same technique later (like Cat in the Hat). The Mask cost $23 million to make and grossed $351 million. It made Cameron Diaz a star and made Jim Carrey a legend.
The World's Oldest Cat
Flossie has already outlived two owners, but she keeps on keepin' on. Flossie was born into a colony of feral cats in 1995 and was adopted by a worker at a nearby hospital. Decades years later, the man that inherited her could no longer care for an elderly cat, and she was surrendered to the Cats Protection shelter in Kent, UK. Vicki Green of London took on the challenge of caring for Flossie, who is now deaf and has failing eyesight.
But now Flossie is a celebrity. At the age of 26 years and 316 days, she achieved the Guinness World Record for the oldest living cat! Green said the world record is nice, but it won't change anything for her or Flossie, who despite her age is affectionate, playful, and has a good appetite. (via Strange Company)
Infinite LEGO Domino Machine
We know how much fun it is to topple a row of dominoes. What's not so fun is picking them up again, or even worse, aligning them upright again. Could someone design a machine that does that? That would be pretty complicated, because dominoes may fall in exact lines, but they end of on the floor in a jumbled mess. Grant Davis not only made a machine that can reset dominoes even when they misalign, he made it entirely out of LEGO parts! More than 4,000 LEGO pieces, which took him between 300 and 400 hours to conceive, design, and build. It picks up dominoes, stacks them in alignment, and topples them, too. (via Gizmodo)
Cow in the House
This is what happens when you take your eyes off a five-year-old for five minutes. Billie Jo Decker found that her daughter Breanna had let her pet calf into the house. The calf seems to enjoy the adventure. Decker didn’t lose her cool, and in fact was pretty amused by the situation. She just grabbed a camera and recorded Breanna’s attempts at explanation. And it eventually leads to an adorable moment of affection between Breanna and her beloved calf. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

Santa Claus' New Sleigh
Hey, have you ever wondered how Santa Claus travels all over the world in one night? Maybe it's his ridiculously powered triple valveless pulsejet engine throwing off heat as it zips across a field of snow. You could even say it glows! Crazy Rocketman Robert Maddox outfitted his souped-up go-kart with ski runners and twinkling Christmas lights, and himself with a Santa Claus suit (the beard is natural) to open up the Christmas season in style! He says it about 12 degrees where he is, so it's a good thing that engine is hot enough to warm his hand after his ride. (via reddit)
Delivery Man Begs Chicken to Stay Inside
This delivery driver was told to leave a package in the garage. But there was a chicken named Fancy in the garage, recovering from an injury. Fancy wanted to go outside, and the driver needed to take a picture of his delivery. That leads to an amusing scene in which the driver puts the chicken back in, and she follows him straight back out before he can snap his picture and get the garage door shut. The whole thing was caught on Cyndi and Robert's Ring camera. (via Boing Boing)
What If a Supernova Hits Earth?
A supernova is when a star explodes. If our sun were to go supernova, we wouldn't know what hit us. That's not going to happen in your lifetime. But what about a star outside our solar system? It's been happening since the early days of the universe, but supernova explosions are usually too far away to affect earth much, although they can leave evidence we find millions of years later. Kurzgesagt gives us various scenarios for supernovas at difference distances from Earth, and what might happen. If they were closer, the process of a star dying is pretty complicated for relatively nearby planets. There is a distance that's a "sweet spot" that will rain destruction on Earth over the course of centuries, leading to a future dystopia. Closer than that, well, that's it. The last two minutes of this video is an ad.

Black Friday: The Movie
If they made a movie about Black Friday shopping, of course it would be a horror film. By this point, I’m starting to believe that Black Friday sales are a tradition people only participate in to create news stories and viral videos. Why would anyone want to do this? My Christmas shopping philosophy has evolved over the years -I never buy any Christmas gift because it’s on sale anymore. I’d personally rather buy something that the receiver needs or wants. Honest Trailer: Pocahontas
Screen Junkies has been going back in time and picking up some movies that everyone knows, and were released before they started doing their Honest Trailer series. Today they are giving us the lowdown on Disney's 1995 animated feature Pocahontas. Yeah, that was ten years before YouTube! In this movie, Disney reached back into history to find an American princess, and had to alter the real story beyond recognition to make it happen. Somehow I didn't pay enough attention the first time around to notice it was a retread of The Little Mermaid. The real treat here is the song parody of "Colors of the Wind."

Why Build a Diving Board Twice the Olympic Height?
Why would anyone need a 65-foot tall diving platform? The Montreal Olympic Sports Centre has a 20-meter diving board, to go along with their many other specialized swimming and diving facilities. It was cliff diver Lysanne Richard who talked them into adding the super-high platform. After all, they had room for it, and it's indoors where she can practice out of the cold. Tom Scott climbs up to the platform, but it's Richard who takes the plunge -after she sends her shoes down by zipline.
LEGO Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens
Snooperking saw the teaser trailer for the Star Wars film The Force Awakens and set to work making a LEGO version. It took about twelve hours of work, but he got it uploaded less than a day after the teaser trailer was released in 2014, just in time to join the family for a holiday weekend visit. (I Know) I'm Losing You
The Temptations were the first to record the song "(I Know) I'm Losing You" in 1967. The song was also a hit for Rare Earth in 1970 and Rod Stewart in 1971. I'm fairly sure this clip is from The Ed Sullivan Show.
Jaguars Do Not Make Good Pets
Don't even think about keeping a jaguar as a pet. It's a bad idea for everyone involved. In this story, someone bought a jaguar cub to keep as a pet. But then Khali grew, and the owner couldn't handle her anymore. A female jaguar can grow to six feet long and more than 200 pounds. She was then kept in a warehouse, where she was confused and terrified. That's when ONCA, a wildlife rehabilitation and advocacy organization, was called in. They took Khali to their facilities in the Bolivian Amazon.
The problem Khali presented was that she was no longer young enough to be adopted by a foster jaguar mother, but she wasn't at all familiar with the rain forest, so she couldn't be released -yet. ONCA volunteers took care of her in stages, from helping her to calm down to giving her gentle jungle experiences to taking her out in the forest to live in her own enclosure. That enclosure was enlarged to get her used to her new habitat. We hope that she'll eventually be able to strike out on her own in the rain forest where she belongs.
The Monk
So, the new monk goes to the head monk to ask him about this. He points out that if there was an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies. The head monk says, “We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.”
So, he goes down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original. Hours later, nobody has seen him. So, one of the monks goes downstairs to look for him. He hears sobbing coming from the back of the cellar and finds the old monk leaning over one of the original books crying. He asks what’s wrong.
“You idiots,” he says, with anger and sadness in his eyes, “the word was celebrate!”

Andor 1975 TV Intro
Disney's newest Star Wars series is Andor, the story of Cassian Andor who we met in the movie Rogue One. But what if it were an action series from the 1970s, in the vein of Hawaii 5-O or Space 1999? Auralnauts makes it happen, as they place the TV show in the time period where the prequel really fits- 1975, a couple of years before the first Star Wars movie. Will we ever be able to let go of Breaking Bad? Maybe not, when fans keep giving us treats like this supercut from Matthijs Vlot. Vlot made a rap song out of clips from the TV show that rhymes, holds a proper beat, and does not rely on autotune or other tricks outside of old-fashioned editing. It’s just Walter, Jesse, and the other characters saying the things they said. The result is catnip for fans of the show! (via Warming Glow)

Mel Blanc and Jack Benny on Johnny Carson
The YouTube account for Johnny Carson has just made available a clip of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson from 1974, in which the guests were Jack Benny and Mel Blanc. Blanc, "the man of a thousand voices," tells how he got his first job in voice work in 1927. That puts this recording halfway between Blanc's breakthrough and today. Listen to Blanc do his cartoon characters, plus a car, a horse, and more. He and Benny go over some of their old routines and laugh at themselves so much that we can't help but laugh along with them.
The Munching of the Flowers
Sunflower Farm Creamery sells goat cheese, Nigerian dwarf goat kids, and other products. But since "sunflower" is in the name, they are obligated to grow sunflowers. Not that this is a burden, but with all these goats around, the sunflowers have to be fenced off to flourish. In autumn, when the plants decline and the flowers hang heavy with seed, the day comes when the fence is opened up and the goats scurry to eat the delicious sunflowers, stem, seeds, leaves, and all. The annual Feast of the Sunflowers is a happy occasion, because after all, sometimes you just gotta stop and eat the flowers.
Animal Testing
