Bizarre Flower Sex

Ze Frank, who usually gives us True Facts about animals, has veered off and made a video about plants. But true to form, it's about the sex life of plants, and it starts off as suggestive as it can be. Plants reproduce sexually, but since they are rooted in place, many of them depend on animals to connect two potential parents. That's where "the birds and the bees" come in. And a lot of other insects, too. We know how bees pollinate plants, but different plants have evolved some extreme ways of attracting insects. There are flowers that use bizarre mechanical means to load those insects with pollen. Some flowers even swallow up insects, not to eat them (although some do), but to force them to participate in their pollination scheme. Yeah, this is beneficial to the insects in some way, otherwise it wouldn't last too long.  There's a 30-second promotional section at 2:33.

What Sex Was Like in Ancient Rome

Sex in ancient Rome was unconstrained by the monotheistic religions, which either didn't exist yet or were relatively obscure to the Romans. But there were rules, mainly in place to maintain social status, because status was everything. Those with social status followed those rules, unless you were royalty, for which all the rules went out the window. After all, what can indicate status more than being above the rules? If you were poor, working class, from a conquered ethnicity, or a slave, you were sure to get the short end of the stick, so to speak. Weird History explains the rules for sex in ancient Rome and who broke them the most.

The Science of Sex

While sex has obviously been going on in the natural world for far longer than we've been around, "we" meaning humanity itself, it's only been in the last hundred years or so that we've studied it as a scientific subject. The title of this video at YouTube refers to "strange sex practices," but there is no kink discussed here. The images can be described as suggestive, but that's as far as it goes. And our favorite narrator, Tom Blank, doesn't even say "penis," which leads to an amusing string of euphemisms. What it contains are things we've learned from scientific research about typical human sex practices, from kissing to having a cigarette afterward. There are the usual Weird History quips, which are funnier for the fine line they negotiate than for the jokes themselves.

The History of Amsterdam's Red Light District

Amsterdam's famous Red Light District doesn't call itself that. To the Dutch, it's De Wallen, or the Wall. The term "red light district" is mainly to tell you what's going on there, and that's sex work (called "pleasure work" here), which has only been legal in the Netherlands since 2000, and only between consenting adults. But the history of the area goes back hundreds of years. Everyone knew about it, but police turned a blind eye because it was considered a necessary evil and there was a lot of money to be made, you know, like in the rest of the world. Now that pleasure work is legal there, the De Wallen is globally famous, and even more money is made from tourists who just want to be there and see it. The pleasure workers are regulated, pay taxes, and belong to a union, but there are still underground businesses that operate under the radar illegally. And the neighborhood's history has plenty of seedy episodes. This video is not explicit, but it's probably not safe for your workplace.

Girly magazines lead to murder! That’s the scenario in Pages of Death, a 1962 public service film distributed by the organization Citizens for Decent Literature.
