The Man Behind the Murder Castle

H. H. Holmes is often called "America's First Serial Killer," but if you say that, people will cite Albert Fish, Boone Helm, or the Bloody Benders as earlier examples. And there may have been others we don't know about. Be that as it may, Holmes was terrifying- once he got caught. That's when a building he owned became known as the Murder Castle. 

We still don't know the extent of Homes' crimes. He confessed to 27 murders, but not all those people were even dead at the time. Some estimate the total to be in the hundreds, yet he was only convicted of one murder. Historians have since confirmed at least nine victims. Homes had plenty of other crimes in his history, too, and the part of his story that may be the most shocking is how many red flags were ignored before he was finally stopped. Weird History tells us what we now know about Dr. Henry Howard Holmes, which wasn't even his real name.

In Ellicott City, Maryland, Jalen Godard went to burglarize a Verizon store. He left the engine running in his truck for a quick getaway, and someone stole it! Godard called the cops to report the theft, who came and put two and two together. Dodard was arrested, and his truck has not yet been recovered. (via Neatorama)

A Ghost Watches True Crime

Every once in a while, you think about what people will say about you after you're gone. Will your life have a lasting impact? And did you leave a good impression on the people you left behind? Mostly we picture that at our funeral, which could be the last time anyone talks about you at all. But if you happen to be the victim of a widely-publicized murder, you just might end up in a true crime story available to the entire world. And once you're gone, you cannot control the narrative in any way. 

Sure, that's a sad scenario. But in the hands of Ryan George it becomes a comedy as a murder victim's ghost gets a glimpse into the aftermath of the murder, and how his friends, neighbors, and casual acquaintances use their ten minutes of fame on a TV show about him. 

Canadian Bonnie and Clyde

Two people seemed suspicious to the Reddi Mart store owners in Spruce Grove, Alberta. One RCMP officer showed up to question the couple, and then all hell broke loose. The one constable and the store owner were busy with the guy, so the woman tried to escape the building, but security cameras are everywhere, and more police arrived. They were both eventually charged with using a stolen credit card plus multiple crimes caught in this video. You can read the news story here.  (via Slate)

Lover's Lane

The story of Lover's Lane is an urban myth about a couple who goes parking and narrowly escapes a horrible death. What we called "parking" is the custom of young people in a car finding a secluded space to canoodle away from prying eyes, and many towns have at least one road that is famous for such activities nicknamed Lover's Lane. The first part of this video explores the history of how parking itself became a thing. 

Then at about five minutes in, we learn about the very real crimes that may have sparked the urban legend. Or did the legend inspire the crimes? Since we don't really know how far back the legend goes, it's not quit clear. But for someone who wants to kill and get away with it, teenagers in a car on a lonely road present a tantalizing opportunity. 

The third section of the video goes into how these crimes and the Lover's Lane legend influenced the modern horror film. That seems only natural, since the target audience for these movies are young people who have the world in the palm of their hands, until they don't.

How Two Teenagers Became The Most Feared Killers In America

Some serial killers commit murder in the furtherance of other crimes, like bank robbery. Some do it for a sexual thrill. Some are lashing out at a world that did them wrong. But it takes a truly terrifying personality to kill over and over for no discernible reason at all. Experts go back and forth about psychopaths- are they a product of an awful childhood or are they born that way, and is that condition even real? 

The 20th century blueprint for psychopathy are the crimes of 19-year-old Charles Starkweather and his 14-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate. Starkweather committed his first murder in November of 1957. Then on January 21, 1958, he killed Fugate's parents and two-year-old sister. Over the next eight days, the two traveled around Nebraska and Wyoming, killing almost everyone they encountered. Weird History brings us the story of Starkweather and Fugate and the trail of dead bodies they left behind them.
