Disclosure Day Trailer
A new movie about aliens making contact with us? That happens all the time. It hits different when you say it's a new movie by Steven Spielberg about aliens making contact with us. Indeed, some of the images in this trailer for Disclosure Day will remind you of Close Encounters of the Third Kind from 1977 or E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial from 1982. Just how much has Spielberg thought about alien contact in those 40+ years?
Disclosure Day was written by Spielberg, based on an original idea by Spielberg, and is directed by Spielberg. John Williams does the music. The trailer gives us little actual plot (good), and more of a feel for what we're in store for. Disclosure Day opens nationwide on June 12.

The Lubbock Lights
A strange formation of lights made their way across the sky over Texas in 1951. There were multiple reports, photographs, and even radar sightings. Once the sightings hit the newspapers, other accounts rolled in until the formation was dubbed "the Lubbock Lights." Those reports came not only from drunks and cranks, but also scientists, professors, and government employees. The Air Force took those reports seriously, but no explanation was ever offered.
Remember, this was in 1951, the era of experimental weapons and aircraft, Cold War espionage, and general distrust of ...everything. Reports of "flying saucers" had been a thing for a few years already, but aliens from outer space were not always the first thing that came to observers' minds. However, aliens or birds or hoaxes were always a possibility. Still, no explanation of the lights was confirmed, and the US Air Force began Project Blue Book to investigate what's going on up there. Dr. Emily Zarka gives us the rundown on the Lubbock Lights

Hot Potato
You've been told all your life not to put metal into a microwave. What's the worst that can happen? The possibility of uncontrollable microwave arcing could damage your appliance, and that's enough to keep most of us from trying it out. But what if the consequences are more serious than we've been told? This guy wrapped his potato in aluminum foil, as we've all done, but then placed it in the microwave. Instead of melting the machine, it becomes a uniquely powerful energy generator, so powerful that it calls extraterrestrials to come and take it. The guy is initially terrified of the situation he has unleashed, but eventually we find that he's sort of into it and joins in the mission to retrieve the potato. (via The Awesomer)

Scamageddon
As you might guess, the portmanteau "scamageddon" refers to the end of the world brought about by folks who con you out of your money. It seems like this is happening now, but to truly be world-ending, it would come from extraterrestrials. In this scenario, Steve Buscemi plays the supreme leader of an invading force using scams against Earthlings, with all the pomp and circumstance that a sci-fi movie would require. (via The Awesomer)

The Flatwoods Monster
In 1952, a flying saucer was seen crashing near Flatwoods, West Virginia. A group of seven people went to find the crash, but were confronted by a space alien, ten feet tall and wearing a metallic dress, with bright glowing eyes. They didn't stick around long enough to find out any more about it. Over time, other witnesses came forward who had also seen either the UFO or the being. Mind you, this was at the height of flying saucer sightings, and there were plenty of movies that featured space aliens in the early '50s. The Flatwoods incident drew more than its share of publicity and investigation, but no one could fully explain what happened. The original seven witnesses were in close agreement about what they saw, and logical explanations have come up short. The story became so ingrained that there is now a Flatwoods Monster museum in that town.

Alien: Earth
When Sigourney Weaver kicked ass in the movie Alien in 1979, it set off a tsunami of sequels and loosely related films. That was because the alien xenomorph scared the daylights out of us. It was only a matter of time before this universe was brought to television. The series Alien: Earth debuts on FX on August 12th.
This series takes place before the events of the original 1979 movie, so you know that what happens will be held tightly wrapped from the public on earth. The premise is that a spaceship from the Weyland-Yutani Corporation crash-lands on earth. As you might guess, there is facehugger on board. But there are also four other alien species brought back from who-knows-where! We may never find out, but we know that these aliens are not benign. (via Geeks Are Sexy)

The Aliens Who Invented Crop Circles
It's obvious to any observer that super intelligent aliens have been keeping an eye on Earth for a long time, trying to come up with ways to communicate with us. So far they haven't come up with a clear method of letting us know they are there, much less that they are more intelligent than we are. But they are brainstorming. Now, the whole idea of brainstorming is to throw ideas out there, no matter how illogical, in the hopes that it may lead the group to come up with something feasible and effective. As Ryan George demonstrates, it wouldn't be logical to assume that super intelligent beings who could travel from distant galaxies to enslave Earthlings can't figure out a better way to tell us about their plans. Tutu Academy
Imagine if aliens landed on earth to find out what residents of this planet were all about. If one were to land at a ballet school, he would probably enjoy the experience, but would leave with a skewed view of humanity. Before you know it, there would be green men pirouetting across the galaxy. Would that be such a bad thing? But the bigger question is, has there ever been a science fiction ballet before? Tutu Academy is an ad produced by Dean Alexander Productions and Design Army for the Hong Kong Ballet. (via Nag on the Lake)

Aliens Everywhere
Imagine a scenario in which the Milky Way galaxy is full of alien civilizations that are advanced enough to travel and communicate with each other, but they don't pay any attention to us here on Earth. That idea can be followed by all kinds of jokes about how human civilization isn't civilized, or otherwise deserving of company. But theoretically, there are other reasons we might not have been contacted by these advanced aliens. We might be honestly too far away to make the trip worth it. We may be relatively too young to understand them. They might know about us and have decided we have nothing useful to offer them. Or we may be among the "do not land here" list for other reasons. Yeah, some of those reasons are getting us closer to the old joke. It's easier to think that we are truly alone in the universe. This video from Kurzgesagt is really 10:15 long; the rest is an ad.
