Casually Explained: Moving Out

James from Casually Explained gives young people a honest and detailed rundown on what it's like to move out of their parents' home. You'll only want to share this with your kids if they've already moved out, because it's pretty discouraging. When Baby Boomers moved out on their own, it was for the purpose of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, which kids these days don't do so much of. Also, we could find a place to live where the rent was only a week's income or less, if you weren't picky. Now the rental units are owned by corporations or Boomers, and they demand exorbitant security deposits because they fear young tenants will act like they did at that age.  (via Tastefully Offensive)

Can Loneliness Kill You?

There's a big difference between being alone and being lonely. If you are alone because you enjoy solitude, that shouldn't be a problem. But if you feel alone and don't want to be, that is real loneliness. The feeling of loneliness and social isolation can do serious damage, but that doesn't mean you are doomed. For many people, feelings of loneliness come and go as life progresses, and smart folks learn how to change their life situation to meet their required spacial connections. AsapSCIENCE lets us in on the science of loneliness and its effects. (via Laughing Squid)

Things That Are Making You Broke But Take 10 Seconds To Stop

The modern world of internet apps makes everything simple and convenient, particularly spending money. When all you have to do is push one virtual button to buy something, the price doesn't hit you nearly as hard as handing over cash. That price may look small now, but when it's multiplied over time, you'd be shocked by the total. Automatic payments often go ignored, but the effect on your bank balance adds up, and suddenly you're broke and you don't even know how it happened. Chill Dude Explains goes over ten ways your money is disappearing while you don't even notice. Not all of them are due to the convenience of the internet, but all are easy to miss if you aren't paying close attention.

Customer Loyalty Rewards

I honestly think all the local grocery is getting from me are my grocery-buying habits, which is obvious. I don't use a smart phone, and my store account is set up without email, much less social media. They still manage to send me coupons for what I'm going to buy. However, I'm sure there are plenty of hyper-connected people that make all that information accessible to them without even thinking about it. This comic is from Randall Munroe at xkcd.

Moving Walkway

I don't know, it's very possible that I could have been all of these people at one time or another. I do know that I went out of my way to teach my children not to block sidewalks, doorways, and escalators. I've noticed that few people learned that lesson. This chart is from Matt Shirley. Realism in Movies

Yeah, that might be your home, but it's not your own home. Especially if you're a member of the target audience for a science fiction movie. This comic is from Toon Hole. (via reddit)

When Someone Doesn't Read The News

When things are boing bad, the happiest people are those who don't know what's going on. On the one hand, it's better for your mental health to ignore the news. On the other hand, a lot of the bad things happening these days is because of people not paying attention to what's happening outside their own world.

The Sales Pitch

If you can't fulfill a need for your customers, the next tactic is altruism and guilt. That's when you let them know that proceeds of your sale benefit the local school charity, or in this case, the Gopher Guides. When that fails, you have to bring out the big guns. This little girl has put some real thought into her spiel. Avoiding future awkwardness must be worth at least five dollars. This is the latest comic from Chris Hallbeck at Maximumble.

Lost Phone

Where is Papa's Phone?

Papa can't find his phone. It rings, but it's not in his pockets. It's not in his car. When he walks away, no one can hear the ringing, so it must be on him somewhere. Can all the assembled family members help him find it? The best part of this video is his sense of humor about the whole thing. The mystery will be solved by the end of this video.
