How They Say "Cheers!" in 70 Countries

There are few places around the world without a tradition of group drinking. The English "Cheers!" is a shortcut, a one-word toast. The same thing is done in many other countries in many other languages, although there are some variations on the tradition. You might notice that Russia has several such toasts. And some places that don't use a one-word toast still practice group drinking, so they've appropriated "Cheers!" I learned about the Chinese "Gan Bei" about 40 years ago. My boss told me it meant "Bottoms up!" implying that the glass should be drained. You should not assume that in the other languages. It's not a bad idea to ask about drinking etiquette in places you aren't familiar with. (via Laughing Squid)

Remember CosMc's?

Hey, remember that time when McDonald's opened a chain of coffee shops? Me neither. Weird History Food usually goes through the whole timeline of chain restaurants, but for this one they only had to go back two years. Really. CosMc's was a coffee shop that offered plenty of fancy variations on coffee plus a variety of bizarre cold drinks. There was a lot of hoopla in a very short time, and then it disappeared just as quickly. You will be forgiven if you don't remember it at all, because there was most likely never a CosMc's near you. What we learned from this experiment is that McDonald's, as successful as it is with burgers and fries, is always looking for the Next Big Thing, no matter how weird. The Reason You Drink

Mary and Paul Sommers of Dayton, Ohio, sent all three of their children through the same Catholic grade school. This is the final year for their youngest son, Jake. To show their appreciation for the patience the teachers showed, they got Jake's teachers bottles of chardonnay for Christmas, with specially-printed labels you can see here. Their older son DJ Tweeted pictures of the gifts. The response was overwhelming, which Mary did not expect. They even made some TV stations and newspapers. The teachers were more appreciative than shocked. (via Buzzfeed)
