You know the story of the Trojan Horse, of course, because you've read Homer's Iliad, the epic poem about the Trojan War, right? No, because you haven't read it, and also because the Trojan Horse isn't in the Iliad. But you know the story of how the Greeks won the war against the city of Troy after ten years by leaving a gift of a massive wooden horse behind, which the Trojans accepted and brought into the city gates, not realizing it was full of Greek soldiers. It only makes sense the Trojans would do that, despite the horse's odd weight, without looking to see what was inside.
Is there any truth at all to the story? We once thought that the city of Troy was itself fictional, until Heinrich Schliemann found it in Turkey (and dug right through the layer that would have existed at the relevant time). But that doesn't mean there was a ten-year war. And while the tale of the Trojan Horse was layered with supernatural deeds by Greek gods, that was normal for both historical and fictional accounts in ancient Greece. Weird History looks at the story of the Trojan Horse, and reveals some theories about how it could have happened, whether it did or not.

The Trojan Horse

Over the years I have learnt that the only truth is that most historic truths are guesses.
I firmly believed in 'land bridges' carry our forebears, and bears, across the salty seas from one continent to another.
Now I know they were a complete fabrication, made up to answer a question unanswerable.
Millions of people swear, literally, by the words written in the bible.
The bible in our family dates from 1779 and has F's in place of S'esses, and it is written in that bible that 'Jesus rode through the sky in a vessel 33 cubits long with flames issuing from behind' ... so if you believe the bible old J.C. was a off world alien sent here to steer us all onto a better road ... maybe.
Forget the bible, how about the 'Daughters of Eve' actual made up theory, where we humans ALL came from a village in Africa somewhere, and we ALL had the same mother, who's name was Mrs. Eve ... where in fact it has since been proved that the Asian people and the European people did not come from Africa at all.
So, even though I HAVE read the Iliad (compulsory forced reading at the non religious high school I went to, a breath of fresh air after being cloistered at a Catholic School for a few years) ... I am aware of the need to take everything with a bushel of evaporated sea water.
So, anyway, I am pretty sure the Trojan Horse thing was based on the actual story of a horse being gifted to some people, and that horse, being a carrier of fleas innumerable and plagues a many, caused the downfall of said city ... most likely aided, musically at least, by a few guys playing trumpets.
But I may be getting my dates mixed up
Dates !
Reminds me of that song ... 'Midnight at the Oasis'
Been a while since I sent my camel to bed.
