If Plastic Surgeons Were Honest

Roger Horton is back with another Honest Ad, this one for Dr. Roger's Dysmorphia Exacerbation Clinic. He gives us a lot to think about. Personally, I've always rejected the idea of unnecessary surgery, but plastic surgery is sometimes a boon to an individual, if not totally necessary for life. A lot of today's surgical techniques were developed to help World War I veterans, whose horrific injuries kept them isolated from other people until they underwent facial reconstruction. Children born with cleft palates have much improved lives after surgical repair. But those cases are few and far between for the average plastic surgeon, who can make obscene amounts of money by altering bodies to improve a perfectly normal appearance. That's why so many plastic surgeons take a month off every year to provide free surgery to people who can really benefit in developing countries- to make up for the incessant futility of their regular jobs.

Do plastic surgeons do the free surgeries to off set the futility of their normal jobs--or do they do it for the tax write off or because they like to help out the less fortunate?

Maybe I'm just not cynical.

I'm sure all of that factors in.

Article in WAPO August 4th claims the US average for Doctors in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is $545,600 (including investments and businesses) working a 54 hour week. Well a 54 hour week is only 8 hours a day minus an hour for lunch... 7 days a week.
I agree the frivolous plastic enhancements are a waste, but the reconstructive surgery is life itself for some accident victims and soldiers.
