Don't put anything up your butt that doesn't have a flared base.

Despite all the logic for removing statues commemorating Confederate leaders – and by implication, the Confederacy itself – I can't help but see this as little better than the Taliban destroying the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan.  And why is the removal of the A.P. Hill statue, which stood over his remains, any different than a vandal toppling your parents' headstones in a cemetery?

When are we going to stop trying to view past events and actions under the lens and rose-colored spotlights of 'modern' thinking?  And what happens in, say, another hundred and fifty years, when those perceptions may have done a pendulum swing?

The Taliban was trying to remove the values that the Buddhist statues represent. We are trying to remove the values that Confederate leaders represent. If we do a "pendulum swing" back the other way, well then some racist piece of crap will have to pay for a new statue. Boo-hoo.

Anybody who wants to continue to aggrandize the Confederates is welcome to recognize that the statue has a flared base.

With all due respect, getting rid of
Confederate statues (which never should
have been allowed in the first
place), goes a long way to preventing
a "pendulum swing" in another 150 years.

Most of those statues weren't erected until 40 or more years after the war, the Lee statue in Charlottesville was 1924. The purpose wasn't to honor the losers but intimidate the Negros, keep 'em from gettin' uppity, and kowtow to Jim Crow. The statues were also props in the training of young whites in maintaining the status quo.
They took down 73 statues with lots of publicity, however there are 723 left standing.

BB, I understand what you're saying. In Philly a statue of Kate Smith was removed because in the 1930's she recorded two songs from a Broadway Show that are now considered racist. Well by white folks, I'm sure black people always did. I thought that was overreacting but I've no dog in the hunt.

As far as the pendulum swinging back in 150 years I highly doubt slavery is coming back in this country. There will always be mini-racism by individuals, very small groups, families, and for stupid reasons as always. But I can't see cities, states, regions going that way.
But hey, we won't be around, they're on their own.

Glenn Miller article was great BUT- it leaves out an important part to the story. Miller was recording music and dialog to be played to German soldiers which made him a real and legal target. https://youtu.be/Qj43p9AuY_Y
