Circe 1999, I spent a year in that part of the Rio Grande Valley on a field assignment in my work. Yes, that area is one of the most obese in the nation, due to poverty and culture. Grocery stores there sell lard in 40 pound buckets and sweets are everywhere, as are carbs like bread. I've even seen mothers put Big Red, the sickeningly sweet soft drink, in their babies' bottles. You won't be surprised to learn that diabetes there is a leading cause of death.
